Mercury turns retrograde three times in 2027: in February, June and October. Here are the exact dates, along with the retrograde happening right now, which ends in mid-November 2026.
Mercury retrograde 2027 dates at a glance
| Period | Retrograde begins | Direct again | Signs and degrees | Full shadow window |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fall 2026 (now) | Oct 24, 2026, 07:30 | Nov 13, 2026, 16:30 | Scorpio 20° → Scorpio 5° | Oct 4 – Nov 30, 2026 |
| Winter 2027 | Feb 9, 18:00 | Mar 3, 12:45 | Pisces 5° → Aquarius 20° | Jan 25 – Mar 23 |
| Summer 2027 | Jun 10, 18:45 | Jul 4, 20:15 | Cancer 6° → Gemini 27° | May 26 – Jul 19 |
| Fall 2027 | Oct 7, 15:00 | Oct 28, 14:15 | Scorpio 4° → Libra 19° | Sep 17 – Nov 13 |
All times are UTC and were calculated with the Astronomy Engine library. Mercury moves very slowly around a station, so treat each time as accurate to within about an hour. For US Eastern time:
- February: Feb 9 at about 1:00 p.m. EST → Mar 3 at about 7:45 a.m. EST
- June: Jun 10 at about 2:45 p.m. EDT → Jul 4 at about 4:15 p.m. EDT
- October: Oct 7 at about 11:00 a.m. EDT → Oct 28 at about 10:15 a.m. EDT
If you live in East Asia or Australia, several of these stations land on the next calendar day. The February station, for example, falls in the early hours of February 10 in Tokyo and Sydney.
The retrograde happening right now
If you're reading this in late October 2026, Mercury is retrograde in Scorpio. It turned on October 24 at 20° Scorpio and goes direct on November 13 at 5° Scorpio. The post-shadow runs until November 30, when Mercury gets back to the degree where it first turned.
A few numbers worth knowing about 2027
- Retrograde days: about 22 in February–March, 24 in June–July and 21 in October. That adds up to roughly 67 days, a little over 18% of the year, which is typical.
- Shadow days included: the three full windows cover 57, 54 and 57 days, or 168 days in total. That's about 46% of 2027. If every shadow day really were off-limits, you'd lose almost half the year, which is a good argument for treating these windows as review time, not shutdown time.
- A pattern: every 2027 retrograde starts in a water sign and backs into an air sign (Pisces to Aquarius, Cancer to Gemini, Scorpio to Libra). In astrological terms, each one moves from feeling-led material into more social, idea-led material.
- An overlap: Mars is retrograde from January 10 (in Virgo) to April 1 (in Leo). So for the whole February retrograde, from February 9 to March 3, both planets are retrograde at once. Venus has no retrograde in 2027.
What a shadow period is
Each retrograde has a pre-shadow and a post-shadow, and together they explain why the "full shadow window" column above is so much wider than the retrograde itself.
Take February as an example. Mercury will go direct at 20° Aquarius on March 3. The first time it crosses 20° Aquarius on its forward run is January 25, and that's where the pre-shadow starts. After it goes direct, Mercury has to travel back up to 5° Pisces, the degree where it turned around on February 9. It gets there on March 23, and that's where the post-shadow ends.
So Mercury passes over the same 15-degree stretch of sky three times: forward, backward, then forward again. Astrologers often read the pre-shadow as the time when the themes of a retrograde first show up and the post-shadow as the wrap-up phase. In practice, the pre-shadow is a good reminder to finish things and back up files, and the post-shadow tells you there's no need to launch something the morning Mercury goes direct.
What retrograde actually is
Mercury never moves backward. Retrograde is an optical effect caused by two planets moving at different speeds.
Mercury goes around the Sun in about 88 days, and Earth takes 365. Because Mercury's orbit is smaller and faster, it regularly laps us as it passes between Earth and the Sun. For a few weeks around that pass, its position against the background stars seems to drift backward (westward) before it picks up its normal eastward motion again. It's the same thing you see when a runner on the inside lane of a track overtakes you: for a moment they seem to slide backward against the trees behind them, even though they're running forward the whole time.
This is also why you can't really see Mercury during most of a retrograde. It sits close to the Sun in the sky and gets lost in the glare. It happens three or four times a year, for about three weeks each time.
February 9 – March 3: Pisces into Aquarius
Mercury turns at 5° Pisces and backs into Aquarius, then goes direct at 20° Aquarius. Pisces is linked with imagination, creative work and rest, while Aquarius covers friendships, groups, communities and long-range plans. Some ideas for these weeks:
- Reopen a shelved creative project. Read the old draft, sketchbook or playlist before you start anything new. You may find it's closer to finished than you remember.
- Audit your groups. Look at the group chats, clubs and volunteer commitments you're part of. Which ones still fit? Leaving a chat you never read is a perfectly good retrograde task.
- Clean up community accounts. Unsubscribe from newsletters you skip, update forum profiles and change notification settings.
- Check in on January plans. The pre-shadow starts January 25, around when New Year plans usually get their first real test. Rework the plan rather than dropping it.
Reflection prompt: What did I start with real excitement that I quietly stopped working on?
June 10 – July 4: Cancer into Gemini
Mercury turns at 6° Cancer, backs into Gemini and goes direct at 27° Gemini. Cancer is about home, family and domestic routines. Gemini covers messages, short trips, siblings, neighbors and the flood of everyday information. This one is all about household admin:
- Sort home paperwork. File the lease or home documents, find the appliance manuals and write down warranty end dates in one place.
- Clear your message backlog. Go through unanswered texts, voicemails and that email thread you starred in April.
- Set up a shared summer calendar so the people you live with can see camps, visits and trips in one spot.
- Call a relative or sibling you've been meaning to catch up with.
Mercury goes direct on July 4, a busy US travel weekend. If you're heading somewhere, the travel buffers in our Mercury retrograde survival routine apply on any holiday weekend, retrograde or not.

October 7 – October 28: Scorpio into Libra
Mercury turns at 4° Scorpio, backs into Libra and goes direct at 19° Libra. Oddly enough, this one picks up almost exactly where the current retrograde leaves off: in November 2026 Mercury goes direct at 5° Scorpio, and in October 2027 it turns retrograde at 4° Scorpio. In astrology, Scorpio is linked with shared resources, trust and what we keep private. Libra covers partnerships, agreements and fairness.
- Gather shared paperwork. Make a simple list of joint accounts, shared subscriptions and who pays for what, so everyone's looking at the same information. For actual money decisions, talk to a qualified professional.
- Revisit an existing agreement. It could be about chores, how you split weekends or how you share the car. Talking through an arrangement you already have is usually easier than starting a brand-new negotiation.
- Reread contracts with partners or collaborators and note renewal dates.
- Have the conversation you've been putting off, and listen more than you talk.

Were you born during a Mercury retrograde?
Since Mercury is retrograde roughly a fifth of the time, about one in five people are born with it retrograde. Your birth chart shows this with a small "Rx" next to Mercury. Astrologers often read a retrograde Mercury in a natal chart as someone who thinks things over before speaking. If that's you, you may notice these review periods feel more natural than rushed ones.
Planning around the dates
The retrograde calendar shows whether Mercury is retrograde, in shadow or direct right now, and its dates are calculated the same way as the table above, not copied from an almanac. To fit in a single review session, pick a full moon from the moon calendar that falls inside one of the windows and block off an hour that evening.
